Wahoo, Mahi and a Fun Sailfish in Key West
The Key West Offshore Slam. Well, we were missing a tuna, for our Key West offshore slam, but it was still a great day of fishing. A sweet couple on their first offshore charter got the job done right with a sailfish, mahi mahi and a wahoo!
It was a beautiful start to this 8 hour, full day offshore charter. The sunrise was perfect, but you can’t eat a sunrise, so we got offshore, and got to work quickly. I was ready for whatever adventures awaited.
The day started out rather quickly, with a very spirited sailfish. My charter had never caught a saltwater fish, so it was an excited first fish for him. The jumps were fantastic and right along side the boat. Shortly after we release the sailfish, we hooked up on a wahoo who fought like he was twice his size. After he nearly escaped to Cuba, we were able to work him to the boat so we could take him to dinner. As we started trolling toward home, we were able to grab a mahi off a weedline.
While we didn’t crush the fish, we caught some of the best we could have found offshore of Key West. When you catch a tuna, wahoo, mahi and a sailfish in Key West in one day, it’s considered to be an offshore grand slam. It’s not something that happens frequently, but when it does, it always makes for a memorable day. We were short a tuna for the day, but to still catch the best of the Key West pelagic fish in one day is never a bad thing!
So the flags were flown, the adventure of a lifetime complete, and memories made for future fish telling stories.
